PECOS PUEBLOOn the Santa Fe Trail There is one historic place in New Mexico that I return to again and again. It is the ruined pueblo and Spanish mission of Pecos in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristos, 25 miles east of Santa Fe. I have been there at all seasons of the year and in every kind of weather. No visit is ever quite the same. Once on Christmas Eve, many years ago, I attended a wedding in the old, roofless church. Friends from Santa Fe brought a justice of the peace and had him perform the ceremony from the adobe platform that has one held a stone altar.
